Parasite Prevention
Protecting Your Pet Inside & Out
At Ste. Anne Veterinary Hospital, we believe prevention is one of the most powerful tools in keeping your pet healthy. Parasites like fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal worms can all cause serious health problems—and some can even be passed to humans. The good news? Preventing these issues is easy with the right plan in place.
-
We tailor parasite prevention to our climate and risk levels:
- Tick prevention: Recommended when temperatures are above freezing (often March to December)
- Heartworm prevention: Given monthly from June 1 to November 1
We offer a variety of safe and effective parasite prevention products, and we’re always happy to help you choose the one that best fits your pet’s needs and your lifestyle.

Parasites aren’t just an inconvenience—they can cause significant illness in pets.
Some of the most common parasite-related conditions we see include:- Itching, hair loss, and skin infections caused by fleas
- Tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease, Anaplasma, and Ehrlichia
- Heartworm disease, which can be life-threatening if untreated
- Intestinal worms like roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms
Many of these parasites can be carried into your home or backyard—even if your pet doesn’t venture far. Some, like roundworms and hookworms, can also pose a risk to people, especially young children.

Be sure to contact us if your pet shows any of the following:
- Excessive scratching, licking, or biting
- Skin irritation or scabs
- Worms or eggs visible in stool
- Diarrhea, vomiting, or unexplained weight loss
- Coughing, lethargy, or decreased stamina
Even subtle signs could indicate a parasite issue—early action is key.
