Spay & Neuter

A Healthy Start for a Happy Life

We believe that spaying and neutering are more than just routine procedures—they’re important steps toward a longer, healthier life for your pet, and a way to promote responsible pet ownership in our community. Whether you’ve just welcomed a new puppy or kitten into your home, or you’re considering the procedure for an adult pet, we’re here to walk you through everything you need to know.

    • Spaying (for females) is the surgical removal of the ovaries and usually the uterus.
    • Neutering (for males) is the surgical removal of the testicles.

Both procedures are performed under general anesthesia and are commonly done on a day-surgery basis, meaning your pet goes home the same day with post-op care instructions.

  • Spaying and neutering offer a number of health, behavioral, and community benefits:

    • Health Benefits
      • Reduces the risk of certain cancers (like mammary cancer in females and testicular cancer in males)
      • Prevents uterine infections (pyometra) in females—a life-threatening condition
      • May reduce hormone-related health issues later in life
    • Behavioral Benefits
      • May reduce roaming tendencies, aggression, and marking/spraying
      • Helps decrease mounting or heat-related behaviors
Can support a calmer, more focused pet.
    • Pet Overpopulation
      • Spaying and neutering helps prevent accidental litters, reducing the number of homeless animals in shelters and rescues.
  • The ideal timing depends on your pet’s species, breed, lifestyle, and health. We’ll help determine the best time based on their individual needs.

    • Cats: Usually around 5–6 months of age
    • Small/medium-breed dogs: Typically around 6–9 months of age
    • Large/giant-breed dogs: Timing may vary to support healthy growth and development—often between 12–18 months, especially for males

  • We know surgery can feel a little scary, even when it’s routine. Our team takes every precaution to ensure your pet’s safety and comfort from the moment they arrive:

    • Full physical exam before anesthesia
    • Pre-surgical bloodwork is highly recommended to check for any hidden concerns and ensure your pet is healthy enough for anesthesia
    • Pain control before, during, and after surgery
    • Warm, quiet recovery space and attentive monitoring
    • Post-op instructions and support when you go home

Most pets bounce back quickly, with limited activity recommended for 10–14 days to support proper healing.
